Angelina Jolie Says She Has Never Had a Friendship Like Salma Hayek — Why Their Arguments Don’t Break Them Apart

Angelina Jolie says she has never had a friendship quite like the one she now has with Salma Hayek.

That sounds like a standard celebrity-friendship headline until you hear how they describe it. Hayek says they can argue passionately, cry, laugh and still feel safe with each other. Jolie says she has not had this kind of connection before.

So the interesting question is not simply “Are Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek friends?” It is: how did they become this close, and why do their arguments seem to make the friendship feel safer instead of shakier?

How did Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek become friends?

They first worked together on Marvel’s Eternals, released in 2021. Their friendship grew after that, but both women say the connection deepened considerably when Jolie directed Hayek in Without Blood.

Jolie adapted the film from Alessandro Baricco’s novel and directed Hayek alongside Demián Bichir. Working together put them into a much more intense creative relationship than a typical press-tour friendship.

Jolie told PEOPLE that she deeply values the way Hayek understands her, describing the connection as something she has not really had before. Hayek has said the feeling is mutual.

Do Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek actually fight?

Apparently, yes — and that is part of why they trust each other.

In an Entertainment Weekly interview, Hayek described moments where they would start “passionately screaming,” then become emotional, cry, and eventually laugh. The point was not that the friendship is calm all the time. It was that neither woman seemed to experience disagreement as proof that the relationship was in danger.

Hayek described the connection as safe. Jolie emphasized that they can be direct with each other without constantly worrying that honesty will offend the other person beyond repair.

That is a more interesting version of celebrity friendship than “they are always together.” It suggests they do not need to perform perfect harmony to stay close.

Why does Jolie say this friendship feels different?

Part of the answer seems to be timing.

Both women are now in their 50s and have lived through long careers, public relationships, motherhood, fame and plenty of scrutiny. Jolie has spoken before about loneliness and how difficult genuine connection can be. Hayek has also described their bond as unusual because they understand each other at a stage of life when neither has much interest in pretending to be simpler than she is.

Their friendship is also not ending with Without Blood. The pair have said they plan to work together again, with Hayek directing and Jolie producing an upcoming project.

So this does not look like a temporary press-tour friendship built around one movie.

Why are people responding to this story?

Because the fantasy is not really “I want a famous best friend.”

The fantasy is being able to be fully yourself with someone and not feel that every disagreement puts the relationship on probation.

That is why the story connects so naturally to loneliness and adult friendship. Many people are surrounded by acquaintances but still do not feel known. A friendship where you can say the difficult thing and still expect the person to be there tomorrow can feel rare.

Our guides on loneliness in sobriety and building a social life without drinking go deeper into that question when alcohol or recovery changes the social landscape.

Maybe safety is not never disagreeing. Maybe it is knowing disagreement does not automatically mean abandonment.
