Freemasonry in Spain: Grand Lodges, Recognition and Spanish Masonic Traditions

Freemasonry in Spain is not one single organization. Spain has Masonic bodies that belong to different recognition networks and traditions. That means a question such as “Which Grand Lodge is Spanish Freemasonry?” has no complete answer until you ask which Masonic system, recognition relationship, and membership model you mean.

Is there a recognized Grand Lodge of Spain?

Yes. The United Grand Lodge of England’s current list of recognized foreign Grand Lodges includes the Grand Lodge of Spain. For a Mason whose home Grand Lodge uses UGLE-style recognition relationships, that fact can matter for visitation and inter-jurisdiction contact.

Recognition is network-specific, however. It should not be used as a universal label meaning that every other Masonic organization is “fake.” Different Masonic traditions apply different standards and may recognize different bodies. Our guide to Grand Lodges and recognition explains that distinction.

What is the Gran Logia Simbólica Española?

The Gran Logia Simbólica Española (GLSE) describes itself as a mixed, liberal, and adogmatic Masonic organization headquartered in Barcelona and founded in 1980. Its own public material says it does not distinguish by gender, race, or creed and emphasizes freedom of conscience.

That places it in a different recognition and philosophical family from the Grand Lodge of Spain listed by UGLE. The existence of both is one reason “Spanish Freemasonry” should not be written as though Spain has one Masonic authority.

Can women be Freemasons in Spain?

Yes, within Masonic bodies that admit women. GLSE is explicitly mixed. That does not mean every Spanish Masonic jurisdiction has the same membership rules. For the wider distinction among women-only, mixed, and male-only traditions, read Can Women Be Freemasons?.

Is Freemasonry active in Spain today?

Yes. Current official and organizational reporting shows active lodges and Grand Lodge activity in Spain. In March 2026, the Provincial Grand Lodge of Valencia reported the installation of Shaun Parsons Herrera as Grand Master of Spain in Madrid. In July 2026 it reported a new Provincial Grand Master installation in Valencia. GLSE also reported active inter-lodge events in the Canary Islands in 2026.

Those current examples are useful because older discussions of Spanish Freemasonry sometimes stop at twentieth-century repression and give the impression that the fraternity is only historical. It is not.

Why does recognition matter to visitors?

A visiting Mason should not assume that belonging to a lodge in one country automatically permits visitation everywhere. Recognition, correspondence between Grand Lodges, letters of introduction, local verification, and the rules of the destination jurisdiction may matter.

Recent public discussion from people planning moves or visits to Spain repeatedly asks which Grand Lodge operates in Madrid or other cities, what language lodges use, and whether the visitor’s home jurisdiction is recognized. That is a practical search problem, not merely an institutional one.

Are Spanish lodges only Spanish-speaking?

No universal rule applies. Spain has lodges and Masonic communities with different language profiles, and current public reports show both Spanish-language and bilingual or internationally connected activity. A traveler should check the exact lodge rather than assuming the working language from the country name.

Is Spanish Freemasonry “regular” or “liberal”?

Both terms can appear because they describe different organizations and recognition traditions. The Grand Lodge of Spain is listed among UGLE-recognized Grand Lodges. GLSE describes itself as liberal and adogmatic. To understand the distinction without turning it into a value judgment, read What Is Liberal or Continental Freemasonry?.

FAQ

Is Freemasonry legal in Spain?

Masonic organizations openly operate, maintain registered associations, hold events, and publish contact information in Spain today. This article is not legal advice; anyone needing formal legal status should consult current Spanish law and the organization itself.

Does UGLE recognize the Grand Lodge of Spain?

Yes. The current UGLE recognized-foreign-Grand-Lodges list includes the Grand Lodge of Spain.

Is GLSE the same organization as the Grand Lodge of Spain?

No. They are separate Masonic bodies with different stated traditions and recognition relationships.

Can a foreign Mason visit a Spanish lodge?

Potentially, but recognition and visitor procedures matter. Contact your own Grand Lodge or lodge secretary and the destination jurisdiction before assuming visitation is permitted.
